Are you planning or buying your first home? Or redecorating?
I get it, it can be daunting if you do not know where to start. That feeling of making a mistake that could burn a big hole in your wallet or even effect the overall whole look of the space.
Lucky for you CJ Interiors has conducted a list of the dos and don’ts of interior design.
Do's
Do chose things you truly love
Be brave. Following the crowd is not always a good decision. If you truly love that bright yellow spotty chair, go for it! Your home should be a place that represents you and reflects all you unique ways. Decorate from your heart and not what you think will impress.
Do invest
On average people redecorate rooms every five years. Therefore invest in the staple pieces of furniture. For example – a sofa, a piece of furniture that is used every day, a place of comfort. This a pieces that you should invest in for your own benefit.
To take this further I also suggest investing in classic pieces of furniture. These are the sorts of pieces that will fit into any future styles you decide.
Do use dramatic colours in small spaces
Painting small spaces in a colour you would normally not even consider, transforms the space into an eye catching area. The Dramatic colouring promotes a fun filled home with lots of character and allows the space to feel larger.
Do plan your space starting with the largest piece of furniture
Starting with your largest item, will make your life easier, trust me. There is nothing worse than falling in love with all the small items/details in a room and then realizing your largest item is no way going to fit into the remaining space. Also starting with your largest piece of furniture allows for the other elements to fit around this item, meaning the end result should flow and fit perfect together.
Do get inspired
If you take anything away from, this is the do I recommend holding with you. Without getting inspired how can you create a vision and without a vision how can you design your dream space. Check out a recent blog post of mine, exploring all the ways to get inspired. https://cj-interiors.wixsite.com/website/post/where-to-find-interior-design-inspiration
Do use a mixture of different textures
Mixing different textures add depth and interest to the space. There are so many textures available to us so have fun and have a play around with as many as you can.
Do hire an interior designer
I promise this is not a selfless plug. But when it come down to it Renovating or decorating can be very time heavy and expensive. Interiors designers don’t just take this take away this pressure but also explore your needs and style to ensure your home represents you. Designers are able to help guide you to your dream home with ease and without all the mistake, unnecessary expenses and stress.
Don'ts
Don’t push furniture against walls
Allow your furniture to breath and have space. This does not mean leaving meters and meters of space between the wall and the furniture but at least a few cm. This allows the space to free flow.
Don’t mix to many colours
Colourful design is something close to my heart, so I get it filling your home with all the wonderful colours you love to make your home feel happy, bright and exciting seems like the best option. This is not always the case, mixing to many colours can be too much. I advise choosing three colours you will continuously use throughout your home and style with pops of colours, to liven up the place without over doing it.
Don’t rush
Take your time. The worst thing you can do is rush. Rushing only leads to mistakes and regrets. All the best projects take time, time spent thinking about decisions in depth and not hast. It ok if you are running slightly off your time schedule, it will all be worth the finished results.
Don’t paint everything white
There is nothing more dull than walking into a room with bright white walls, the space will feel boring, sterile and lifeless. I’m not saying pick the brightest colour B&Q has to offer but don’t paint everything white just because you haven’t thought about any other options. Also family homes and white walls don’t go hand in hand.
Don’t neglect the details
I recently shared a quote on my Instagram, “The details are not the details, they make the design”. A quote I often tell my clients. It’s the little things that complete a room. Don’t be too quick to push the details aside and focus on the focal points.
Don’t use tiny rugs
When including a rug into a space I do so because it draws attention to the furniture. Therefore using a small rug only draws your attention away from the furniture. Always buy rugs that are large enough to fit under at least the front of each piece of the furniture in the room.
Don’t match everything
Not everything need to match or be from the same collection of furniture. Of course don’t go mixing to many crazy style elements. Try looking at different brands that stock the same colours, styles, material etc.
Don’t pick paint first
For many starting with painting the walls is an obvious starting point. I advise strongly against this. Explore your options first, get inspired and create and overall feeling/mood you are look to create. Pick a few furniture items and balance these with the wall colour.
I make a promise to you that by following these do's and don'ts of interiors you will be on the road to creating a beautiful home.
